![]() ![]() Expect a 30-60 wait as each new level loads. Even worse is that the game suffers from some insanely long load times. ![]() The levels are very short and you will find yourself at the between level "save mission" prompt about every 10-15 minutes. The levels are adequately populated with structures and people, some of which are critical to the story and other are there just to provide ambience and push you in the right direction. Ragnar is armed with a decent supply of 15 unique weapons that are true to the era including axes, swords and maces, and our hero even gets to dabble in powerful Rune magic that enchants his weapons and definitely adds some spice to the combat. Rune puts you in control of Ragnar, a young boy who has been chosen to "save the word" - how cliché. While their new game offers a rich adventure-filled quest, it is heavily bogged down in a mire of bland graphics and toe-tapping load times.Įveryone loves a good Viking game and surprisingly, there are very few of them available. The PS2 conversion of their engine just wasn't up to the task of handling the textures, colors, or even maintain an acceptable frame rate on the next-gen console.Įpic's failure didn't stop Human Head Studios from taking a shot at developing a game with the questionable engine, and Rune: Viking Warlord is the result of their attempts at bringing an epic quest to a console that is in dire need of a good adventure game. Epic Games wisely decided to drop future plans for the PS2 after the dismal failure of Unreal Tournament. After all, the Unreal engine has powered some legendary titles including the popular Deus Ex.īut as with games, game engines don't always port to consoles very well, and in the case of the Unreal engine one only need look to the PS2 version of Unreal Tournament to see this clearly is the case. When that engine is as popular and powerful as the Unreal engine these expectations are even greater. If this wasn't quite the Viking adventure you were looking for (or indeed, quite the level of drama you fancy on a Friday afternoon), Assassin's Creed Valhalla came out this week, too. When a game is released that uses a well-known graphics engine there are immediate assumptions and expectations that title must live up to. But its exclusivity is over now, so you can grab the Decapitation Edition on Steam for £21/€22/$26 in its launch sale. Rune 2 has already been out on the Epic Games Store for a year (and is still there). Whatever you think, you can't deny they're passionate. We could not have battled through this process without your patience, loyalty, and trust.” We especially want to thank the Rune community that HAD OUR BACKS and provided great feedback to help us deliver this new amazing game. “Our disbelief, however, turned to resolve, which we relied on as the catalyst for the passion and drive to make Rune 2: Decapitation Edition, and every aspect - visuals, gameplay, narrative, online multiplayer and so on - has been redesigned and vastly improved. “We had a good game plan last year before we were blindsided the likes and timing of which I have never seen in my decades in the gaming industry,” says Studio 369 president, Matt Candler. They certainly don't shy away from all this in the official press release either, saying: "This edition of Rune 2, resurrected by the Studio 369 development team following an attempted sabotage of (zeni)maximum proportions, has been completely redesigned by a dedicated team of veteran game developers." They were already suing what's left of Human Head, and added Beth and Zeni in as well, claiming that "at the active instructions of Zenimax, Human Head timed the unveiling of its plan to cause maximum damage."Īmongst their bold claims, they also think Bethesda saw Rune 2 was a threat to Skyrim. Last month, Ragnarok claimed in a lawsuit that ZeniMax and Human Head conspired to sabotage the game's launch. Rune 2's publishers, Ragnarok Game, sued to regain control of it, but their beef didn't end there. You see, a bunch of Rune 2's original devs at Human Head got snapped up for a new Bethesda studio, Roundhouse, right as the game launched last year, and allegedly refused to hand over the game's code. ![]() Rune 2 has gone through nothing but drama over the last year - which most recently involved its publishers accusing Bethesda and Zenimax of intentionally sabotaging the game. ![]() It's an open world action-RPG where you play as some Viking trying to save Midgard, but truly, I'm glossing over the interesting bit. Today, Rune 2: Decapitation Edition came out. November is the month of the Viking, apparently, but we're not talking about Assassin's Creed Valhalla this time. ![]()
